Humility

Humility

”a modest or low view of one's own importance; humbleness”(Dictionary.com).

”Humility is the quality of being humble and means putting the needs of another person before your own, and thinking of others before yourself. It also means not drawing attention to yourself, and it can mean acknowledging that you are not always right” (ExamplesYourdictionary.com)

During this journey call life, many times I have been thrust into situations and environments where pride was the dominating force; the stronger the pride, the greater the conflict and the divide.

I chose to write about this topic because I realized how the lack of humility can ruin lives, relationships, marriages, families, friendships, and sometimes lead to years of denied cohesion, friendship, division and unfruitfulness.

As a result, I have been practicing mindfulness, introspection, and self-reflection on my own pride. I have found many occasions where I could have chosen humility or even doubled up on humility and the outcome would have been more favourable for all involved. As a result, I have made it a lifelong goal to pursue, cultivate, and nourish this precious fruit in my life. I have a long way to go, but I am determined to continue growing in this virtue.

I agree that there are times when it’s best to walk away from certain conversations, people, and situations and just simply bow out gracefully. However, many times reconciliation forge through humility would have been best for all involved, but often forfeited by one or both parties refusing to see the bigger picture and gracing the situation with humility for the greater good.

I am truly convinced that many friendships, relationships, marriages, and families could have been saved if humility coupled with selflessness was the chosen path to resolution. But instead, selfish pride dominates these interactions and reconciliation is often denied to all involved including the innocent and the vulnerable.

Nebuchadnezzar had a great lesson in this after his dance with pride; at the end he concluded,

“Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and glorify and honor the King of heaven. All his acts are just and true, and he is able to humble the proud.”

‭‭Daniel‬ ‭4:37‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Today, I encourage all of us to become more aware of our own pride and humility meters; if pride is dominating our lives, let's work diligently to tip the scale more towards the humility continuum. I believe in doing so, we will become better stewards and gatekeepers for the vulnerable, the innocent, and the glory of God. Friendships, relationships, marriages, families, community, and state, will benefit from our growth. Finally, I believe, we will live more rewarding and fulfilling lives under the umbrella of humility, unity, love, and reconciliation.
